Tirupati launches project to enhance Totapuri mango value chain

The State Horticulture Department has approved a project for the phased top-working of Totapuri orchards, with ICAR’s Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (ICAR-CISH) in Lucknow as the lead organisation, in collaboration with ICAR’s Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Bengaluru and Dr. YSR Horticultural University in Andhra Pradesh.
After the central expert committee, constituted to examine the decline in Totapuri mango prices, submitted its report and recommended strategies for strengthening the value chain, government agencies began implementing the suggestions with due seriousness.
A training and demonstration event on ‘Top-working and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)’ was organised in Chinnagottigallu mandal of Tirupati district on Friday (September 11, 2026), where experts provided technical guidance on scientific orchard management to 150 select mango farmers.
The interventions of the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) include mango orchard rejuvenation, construction of pack houses, distribution of fruit covers and subsidies for post-harvest management infrastructure.
ICAR-CISH scientists S.C. Ravi, H.S. Singh and Abha Singh explained the status of the central panel’s recommendations, besides deliberating on fresh fruit marketing, processing, value addition, and market diversification. They advised the farmers to adopt suitable grafting methods and timing of operations, and also suggested byproduct processing to tap newer markets.
District Horticultural Officer Jaya Bharath Reddy announced that the price deficit support of ₹4 per kg to eligible Totapuri mango farmers would be disbursed soon.
