Trump approval nears record low before Election Day: poll - USA Today
With Election Day less than 24 hours away, President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains near a record low as Republicans trail Democrats in the race for Congress, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The poll, released Monday, Nov. 2, found Trump’s approval rating holding at 32%, unchanged from the previous week and just one percentage point above the record-low 31% he hit in October.
Republicans also remained behind Democrats on the generic congressional ballot, though the GOP narrowed the gap. Democrats held an eight-percentage-point advantage in the latest poll, down from an 11-point lead the previous week.
Reuters/Ipsos conducted the poll from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, surveying 1,765 U.S. adults. The poll has a margin of error of about 2 percentage points.
Trump could also be a significant factor in how voters cast their ballots on Nov. 3.
Half of likely voters surveyed by Reuters/Ipsos said their vote would be against Trump, compared with 13% who said they planned to vote in support of the president.
Another 33% said Trump would not be a factor in their vote.
Other polling also points to a Democratic advantage in the closing days of the midterm campaign.
An AtlasIntel poll released over the weekend showed Democrats holding a 14-percentage-point lead over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot.
Election forecasts also give Democrats an advantage in the battle for control of Congress. VoteHub gives Democrats an 89% chance of winning the House, projecting 234 seats, and a 68% chance of taking the Senate, with 52 seats projected.
Those forecasts are probabilities rather than predictions of the final results, and control of Congress will ultimately be determined by individual House and Senate races.
Trump’s unchanged Reuters/Ipsos rating comes as national polling averages continue to show his approval well underwater.
As of Monday, Nov. 2, the RealClearPolitics average put Trump’s approval rating at 39.3%, compared with 58.8% disapproval.
The New York Times polling average showed Trump at 37% approval and 60% disapproval, while Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin average had him at 38.4% approval and 58.8% disapproval.
