Trump to meet Takaichi in New York ahead of Washington summit with Xi - Nikkei Asia

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. President Donald Trump will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New York on Tuesday, two days before his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said.

Amid frosty ties between Japan and China, Waltz announced the schedule during a press briefing on Friday. A senior U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Japan is an "incredibly important ally and regional partner" and that Trump's meeting with Takaichi is "certainly important ahead of the Xi visit."

Trump's talks with Takaichi will be held on the sidelines of this year's U.N. General Assembly. They last met bilaterally in June in France on the sidelines of a Group of Seven summit, though only briefly.
