President Donald Trump appears willing to give diplomacy another chance with Iran even as he seriously considers more military strikes after the election.

The Trump administration is involved in ongoing negotiations centered around a temporary peace deal, an administration official told Semafor, though plenty of roadblocks remain before it can advance.

Trump acknowledged that Vice President JD Vance wrote to Iran in a bid to restart peace talks, though he downplayed the effort and suggested it was about humanitarian needs.

If diplomacy fails, the US is ready to resume combat operations shortly after the midterms, the administration official said, adding: “All they’ll need is a go order from the president.”

Many inside the administration are skeptical about resuming military operations against Iran.

Trump “is the one most open” to a ramp-up, the official said, but even he still has reservations.
