Trump-Xi summit: How the Chinese leader's trip to Washington unfolded

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK/TOKYO -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump have concluded their second formal summit of the year amid continuing tensions over tariffs, rare-earth minerals, artificial intelligence and more.

Four months after Trump traveled to Beijing in May, the two presidents met this time in Washington. The White House welcomed the Chinese leader in elaborate fashion, including a state dinner. Soon after Xi arrived in the Washington, the U.S. said the two sides had agreed to extend their trade truce, which had been due to expire Nov. 10.

But expectations of broader breakthroughs were modest, and the immediate results did little to shift perceptions. Trump and Xi are due to meet again at the APEC forum in Shenzhen in November, and at the G20 Summit in Miami in December.
