Four months after Trump traveled to Beijing in May, the two presidents met this time in Washington. The White House welcomed the Chinese leader in elaborate fashion, including a state dinner. Soon after Xi arrived in the Washington, the U.S. said the two sides had agreed to extend their trade truce, which had been due to expire Nov. 10.
But expectations of broader breakthroughs were modest, and the immediate results did little to shift perceptions.
