Reports in the U.S. press claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is in the process of drafting a plan regarding the strategy to be implemented in the Middle East following the end of the war with Iran.
In a report by the news site Axios, based on information from two U.S. officials and two sources familiar with the matter, it was claimed that the Trump administration’s plan focuses on containing Iran and normalizing Israel’s relations with its neighbors.
It was noted that the plan, which is reportedly still in its early stages, is intended to shape U.S. Middle East policy during the remaining two years of Trump’s term. It was also suggested that the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27 in Israel and the midterm elections expected to take place in November in the U.S. play a significant role in the plan’s development process.
U.S. officials stated that work on the strategy is being conducted at the level of senior political staff within the Trump administration as well as across various agencies. Sources reported that Trump has held two meetings with his senior advisors in recent weeks to discuss the plan, during which various ideas were raised.
Axios claimed that during private discussions, Trump said he was working on “something much bigger” in the Middle East following a war with Iran. The White House declined to comment on the allegations.
Sources reported that the strategy in question is being evaluated as based on three key elements. One of these, it was noted, is the establishment of a regional alliance under Washington’s auspices to limit Iran’s influence among the U.S.’s allies in the region.
It was noted that another element involves securing the next phase of the Gaza plan spearheaded by Trump, reaching a security agreement between Israel and Syria, and implementing the agreement between Israel and Lebanon.
Thus, it was suggested that a joint effort is planned to end the regional crisis that emerged following Israel’s launch of attacks on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. It was also claimed that the third element involves expanding the Abraham Accords and reaching a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
The report noted that the Trump administration hopes the new Israeli government, to be formed after the October 27 elections, will be willing and able to cooperate with the U.S. as part of a post-war strategy.
According to Axios, some U.S. officials stated that Trump would work to implement the strategy regardless of the outcome of the Israeli elections. It was suggested that the plan is intended to be implemented even if the elections result in a political deadlock.A source familiar with the process noted that drafting the strategy would take a few more weeks, stating, “They’re working on it, but it’s not finalized yet.” “The idea here is to link many elements in the region together and outline how regional harmony can be established after the war. However, it is not yet clear whether all U.S. allies in the region will support this plan,” the source said.
