MİLLİYET.COM.TR / The military capabilities of theTürkiye and Israeli armed forces in the event of a potential conflict were examined during a live broadcast by UAE-based Sky News Arabia.
The broadcast, which compared the two countries’ military capabilities—ranging from air power to tanks, submarines, air defense systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles —revealed two very different pictures of the two militaries.
The host noted that the comparison could not be based solely on military inventory, stating, “We’re not just comparing numbers; we’re comparing two different military potentials. However, one side is gaining the upper hand, and the gap is widening.”
Describing Türkiye as “a major conventional power based on population density, strategic depth, and a rapidly developing domestic industry, ” the host characterized Israel as “a technologically advanced military reliant on intelligence, backed by U.S. support.”
The broadcast noted that the two countries do not share a direct land border and indicated that a potential conflict would primarily unfold through their air and naval forces.
One of Türkiye’s most notable advantages was cited as its manpower. The host stated, “Türkiye possesses a massive demographic advantage, ” noting that Türkiye has approximately 481,000 active-duty soldiers and more than 380,000 reservists.
While it was noted that the Turkish military ranks eighth globally, it was reported that the Israeli military has approximately 170,000 active-duty personnel and ranks 15th.
In the air power comparison, Türkiye’s large F-16 fleet —upgraded with a package from Washington—was highlighted. However, the report did not assess Türkiye’s air power solely based on fighter jets. Special emphasis was placed on Türkiye’s capabilities in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with the Bayraktar TB2, TB3, and KIZILELMA cited as examples.
The host described Türkiye’s position in the UAV sector as a “superpower status.” Regarding Israel’s air power, the report noted that its advanced fleet—comprising F-35 Adir strategic fifth-generation fighter jets—along with F-15 and F-16 aircraft, stood out.
One of the most striking parts of the comparison was the naval forces. While it was noted that Türkiye possesses 16 frigates, 9 corvettes, 12 submarines, and the TCG Anadolu, the Turkish Navy was described as having “overwhelming superiority and blockade capability.”
The Israeli navy, on the other hand, was described as smaller, with the Saar 5 and Saar 6 corvettes and Dolphin-class submarines highlighted.
In the comparison of ground forces, Türkiye’s extensive tank force also drew attention. It was noted that Türkiye possesses more than 2,200 tanks, with the Leopard, M60, and domestically produced Altay tanks cited as examples. On the Israeli side, it was reported that they have Merkava tanks equipped with the Trophy system.
The differing capabilities of the two countries were also compared in terms of air defense systems. While it was noted that Türkiye possesses domestic systems such as HISAR and SİPER, attention was drawn to Israel’s air defense network, which is supported by the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow 2/3 systems.
The final section of the report highlighted Türkiye’s domestic defense industry projects. While it was noted that Türkiye is developing its fifth-generation national fighter jet, KAAN, and indigenous air defense systems, it was stated that the Steel Dome Project aims to reduce dependence on foreign sources and ensure Türkiye’s own deterrence.
