Twitter reacts to terrible call in Commanders-Cowboys game - Commanders Wire

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders 37-20 on Sunday in Week 2 NFL action from AT&T Stadium. In looking at the final score, you’d think the game was never close. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Washington had several opportunities. Just before halftime, quarterback Jayden Daniels led the Commanders inside the five-yard line with under a minute remaining. After throwing it away on the first downs, Washington faced a third-and-goal from the three-yard line. By now, you know what happened next. Left guard Chris Paul stepped on Daniels’ foot, causing him to trip. Daniels tried to break his fall with his left hand. In the process, he injured his elbow — the same one he dislocated last November — and was carted into the locker room. He would not return, and head coach Dan Quinn confirmed after the game that Daniels dislocated his left elbow, but it was not fractured.

Marcus Mariota entered the game for the Commanders in the third quarter and got right to work. He quickly led Washington downfield and threw a dime to wide receiver Dyami Brown for a touchdown. Suddenly, the Commanders are an extra point away from tying the game. Hold the phone. Officials ruled the pass incomplete, saying Brown wasn’t in bounds. Amazingly, the officials confirmed the call after Washington challenged it. The Commanders would ultimately settle for a field goal, making it 17-13. That was essentially the end for Washington.

Fox’s broadcasting crew, Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady, could not believe it. Neither could former NFL head official and Fox rules expert Dean Blandino. The officials made such an egregious error that, after almost every commercial break, Fox showed the replay, with Burkhardt remarking that the play somehow wasn’t ruled a touchdown.

NFL fans are accustomed to bad officiating. Washington fans saw it last week. You virtually see it in every game. And while this call—the second Washington touchdown officials took off the board—didn’t cost the Commanders the game, it changed the entire trajectory of the game. Momentum gone. That boost you get from the backup QB entering the game: gone.
