Two dead after daytime shooting in Scarborough outside hospital - Toronto Star

The victims were both pronounced dead at the scene and the incident is now being investigated as a homicide, police said. 

Police investigate the scene at Providence Healthcare in Scarborough on Monday, where two people were shot and killed.

A husband and wife in their 70s died of gunshot wounds outside a Scarborough hospital early Monday afternoon.

Toronto police said they located a firearm at the scene and are not seeking any suspects in the deaths.

Asked if the deaths were a murder-suicide, Duty Senior Officer Scott Shutt said it was too early in the investigation to say, but confirmed the female victim was a patient at the hospital, Providence Healthcare, which specializes in rehabilitative and palliative care.

“We believe they were married,” Shutt told reporters at the scene.

Officers responded to reports of two people found with gunshot wounds near Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East shortly after 12:30 p.m., police said on social media.

Despite life-saving measures by officers, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Shutt said. The couple have not been identified as police work to notify their next of kin.

There was a heavy police presence in the parking lot at the hospital. Between two cars there was an orange tarp and an empty wheelchair.

The homicide unit is now investigating, police said.

Forensics officers combed the scene, and cordoned off the cars. Visitors could not leave as their vehicles were now part of a crime scene.
