Two Gen-Z candidates from BJP, Congress triumph in Rajasthan civic polls
Two 21-year-olds have entered Rajasthan’s municipal politics after winning council seats in Jaipur and Thanagazi in the urban local body elections.
Congress candidate Faiz Hassan, 21, won Ward 71 of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation. He defeated Independent candidate Mohammad Salim, who received 5,256 votes, while the BJP’s Nisha Gaur finished third.
In Alwar’s Thanagazi municipality, 21-year-old BJP candidate Neha Sharma defeated her Congress rival by 101 votes. It was reportedly the largest winning margin among the BJP candidates elected from the municipality.
Before entering politics, Neha worked as a journalist for nearly four years, covering issues of public concern. Following her victory, she is also being discussed as a possible contender for the post of Thanagazi municipal chairperson.
The victories of Neha and Faiz have brought two Gen-Z representatives into Rajasthan’s civic bodies at a time when young candidates are beginning to find greater space in local politics.BJP LEADS CONGRESS BY 574 WARDS
The BJP emerged ahead of the Congress in the statewide contest, winning 4,171 wards against the Opposition party’s 3,597. The ruling party led the principal Opposition party by 574 wards.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma called the result a “historic victory” and said it reflected public confidence in the BJP’s governance and development agenda. He credited the verdict to the state government’s work over the past two-and-a-half years and the party’s public outreach.
Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra, however, argued that the statewide contest was closer than the ward tally suggested, claiming that the BJP’s vote-share lead was less than one percentage point.
Dotasra said the BJP had led the Congress by 8.12 percentage points in the 2014-16 urban local body elections under the Vasundhara Raje government.
