Two injured as wild gaur hits scooter in Keralam’s Kasaragod

A wild gaur that was crossing the road reportedly hit a scooter at Manjakal near Bovikanam in Kasaragod in Keralam in the early hours of Monday (September 21, 2026), seriously injuring two people.

The injured are C.M. Jithina, 22, a BSc Nursing student from Thankethadukka at Karivedagam and P. Amalraj, 24, of Alathumkadavu. Amalraj was riding the scooter at the time of the incident.

The two were thrown onto the road after their scooter reportedly collided with the animal. Jithina, who suffered injuries to her chest, was initially admitted to a hospital in Kasaragod. She was later shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru as her injuries were serious.

Amalraj, who also sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cherkala.

Residents said the presence of wild gaurs has become frequent in the Manjakkal area for the past two years. However, there had been no reported incidents of wild gaurs attacking people.

They demanded urgent measures, including the construction of safety fencing, to control the movement of wild gaurs in the area.
