Two Killed In Los Angeles Strip Mall Shooting - Newsweek
At least two people were shot dead at a Los Angeles strip mall in Northridge on Friday, according to reports.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said they responded to the scene of a large party shortly before 11 p.m. PT, according to ABC 7โs Eyewitness News. Officers then heard a number of gunshots after arriving at the scene, the outlet reported.
ABC 7โs Chris Cristi said there were also reports of a third victim.
Speaking to NBC Los Angeles, an LAPD spokesperson said one person was also stabbed during the incident. Their condition is not currently known.
Newsweek contacted the LAPD for comment by email outside of regular working hours.
Helicopter footage showed several dozen people in handcuffs being lined up outside the strip mall. More than a dozen police vehicles could be seen with scores of officers on the scene.
The incident took place on the 18400 block of Nordhoff, close to the California State University Northridge campus.
Police have not publicly identified any suspects or said if they believe they are at large. It is unclear what took place prior to the shooting and police have not said if they have a suspected motive.
In a post on X, Mike, a self-described sport and politics fan, wrote: โI was just in the area of Nordhoff & Reseda. Heavy police presence, helicopters and fire trucks. Reports: 2 people critically shot. 2 suspected shooters reportedly still at large.โ
Mike added: โAVOID THE AREA. Stay indoors and stay alert.โ Newsweek has not yet been able to confirm the poster's claims.
Police have not publicly said how many shooters they believe were involved or whether they are in custody.
According to a Newsweek analysis of FBI agency-level data California recorded 157,828 violent crimes between May 2025 and April 2026, the most of any state ahead of Texas with 103,827.
This worked out at 402.6 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, compared with 331.3 in Texas and 383.4 in New York, though below other states such as New Mexico and Arkansas.
A recent high-profile incident saw Jonathan McKinsey, a New York Times executive, shot dead in September in Dublin, southeast of San Francisco. Police arrested his in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, on suspicion of murder.
