Two Runners Die During UK's Great North Run Half Marathon - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two runners died during the "Great North Run" half marathon in England, according to a statement from the event's organizer on Monday, September 14, as quoted by the BBC, cited by Antara.

"Everyone involved in organizing the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the two participants," the organizer said in a statement.

The two 25-year-old men reportedly collapsed during the race and later died. Medical personnel attempted to provide first aid.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, and the organizers have provided support to the victims' families.

"We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them," the spokesperson said.

The race, which runs from Newcastle to South Shields, has been running for 45 years. This year, 63,000 runners participated, taking on a 21.1-kilometer course.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also participated in the event, becoming the first British prime minister to compete in the half marathon, according to the BBC and quoted by RIA Novosti.

Meanwhile, Sky News reported that Burnham signed up for the event earlier this year, while he was still serving as the mayor of Greater Manchester. This was part of his bid to raise money for the homeless charity, Changing Lives, which he visited last month. 

This would be Burnham's fourth year running in the half marathon, after 2021, 2023, and 2024.
