Durham police have arrested two teens after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed with a machete and robbed at a Whitby movie theatre.
Two teenagers have been arrested and charged after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed with a machete and robbed at a Whitby movie theatre over the weekend.
A 15-year-old boy from Oshawa and a 17-year-old boy from Pickering were arrested Wednesday, Durham police said in a news release.
Both face charges of robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, aggravated assault and disguise with intent.
Police said the arrests stem from an incident at Landmark Cinemas on Consumers Drive shortly after 12:40 a.m. Sunday, when officers responded to a report of an armed person. Officers arrived to find a 15-year-old boy suffering from a βsignificant laceration.β
Investigators say the victim had gone to the theatre to meet a girl he knew through social media when a group of youths approached him and demanded his jacket.
When he refused, one of the suspects pulled a machete and βstruckβ him in the arm. The group then assaulted the boy before stealing his jacket and cash, police said.
Investigators identified four suspects and issued arrest warrants for two of them, who were arrested Wednesday.
Police said both arrested teenagers were in violation of release and sentence orders at the time of their arrest.
The 15-year-old from Oshawa also faces charges of possession of weapon dangerous to the public peace, three counts of failing to comply with a release order and one count of failing to comply with a youth sentence order.
The 17-year-old from Pickering faces two counts of failing to comply with a release order and one count of failing to comply with a youth sentence order.
Police believe the attack was an isolated incident and said the investigation is ongoing.
