A woman and her companion from Nagaland's Dimapur were molested at Kolkata's JW Marriott hotel on Saturday (October 3, 2-26) night when the Brazilian football team was departing after a friendly match in the city.
The Brazilian football team was lodged at the five-star hotel for two days during their visit to Kolkata for a friendly match with the Indian team. The event, organised by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), took place at Salt Lake's Yuva Bharati Stadium on Saturday (October 3, 2026) evening.
According to the police, the incident took place between 12.30 a.m. and 1 a.m. when the two were cheering for the Brazil team in the lobby of this prominent five-star hotel located at EM Bypass area
Later, the police also arrested an Uttar Pradesh-based man from the hotel on Sunday morning after the victims lodged an FIR.
"The victims have lodged an FIR at the Pragati Maidan Police Station on Sunday morning alleging that unknown miscreants touched them inappropriately in the JW Marriott hotel lobby when they were cheering for the Brazil football team. As a result, their modesty was outraged," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Kunal Aggarwal.
The case was lodged under Section 74 (outraging a woman's modesty by using criminal force) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
During the investigation, the police thoroughly checked the CCTV footage of the hotel lobby. "We have also arrested the accused from one of the hotel rooms where he had been staying," said the officer.
The accused was identified as Palash Ray, 56, a resident of Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
The development also comes only a week after another man was arrested from a discotheque at JW Marriott hotel on September 27 for allegedly sexually harassing a woman.
