An Emirati traveller facing a last-minute passport problem before an international trip got an unusually quick solution at Dubai International Airport -- a new passport in just eight minutes.

The man realised shortly before his scheduled journey that his passport did not meet the validity requirement for his destination. While his passport still had about a month before expiry, the country he was travelling to required visitors to have at least six months of validity remaining.

What could have ended with a cancelled or delayed trip instead turned into a surprising experience at Dubai International Airport, where the traveller used a passport renewal service available specifically to UAE citizens.#_ 8 .. pic.twitter.com/05iMafGmVDโ€” (@DrAliAlameri) January 9, 2024

"I was told there was nothing faster than Dubai Airport and that it would take 10 minutes," he said in a video shared on social media. "But I was surprised that it took even less, eight minutes, not 10." He praised the efficiency of the service and expressed his pride in the UAE after receiving his renewed passport within minutes.

Dubai International Airport has a dedicated passport renewal facility for UAE nationals. Dubai Airports says the service is available at the Immigration Centre in Terminal 3's arrivals area.

The service is connected to the UAE's government immigration and citizenship systems, allowing eligible Emirati citizens to have their details verified and their passport applications processed through the government infrastructure. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai) has previously highlighted how digital systems have shortened the process considerably.

According to the department, passport renewal transactions that previously took about 35 minutes had been reduced to seven minutes. It also said the number of steps involved in passport and identity procedures had been cut from 20 to a single step through its smart system.

That helps explain how the traveller was able to complete what is normally a time-consuming administrative process within minutes.

Rather than filling out paperwork, travelling to a passport office and waiting for the document to be processed, eligible UAE nationals can access the service at the airport through the countryโ€™s integrated government systems.SERVICE ONLY AVAILABLE TO UAE NATIONALS

The eight-minute renewal, however, is not an airport service available to every traveller.

Dubai Airports specifically states that its passport renewal facility at Dubai International Airport is for UAE nationals only. Foreign passengers travelling through Dubai cannot use the facility to replace or renew their passports.

That means an Indian, British, American or other foreign national who discovers an expired passport at Dubai airport would still face the usual travel-document problems. Airlines and immigration authorities require passengers to carry valid documents that meet the requirements of their destination.

The UAE has also expanded the window in which citizens can renew their passports. Emirati nationals can apply when their passport has expired or when it has one year or less remaining before expiry. The policy is intended to encourage citizens to renew their documents before they run into problems while travelling.INDIA'S PASSPORT PROCESS WORKS DIFFERENTLY

In India, passport renewal is not available through airport facilities like the one at Dubai International Airport.

Indian citizens can apply for passport renewal through the Passport Seva Online Portal and complete the required verification and appointment procedures.

Under the normal process, renewal can take several weeks after successful verification. Tatkaal applications receive priority and can be processed within a few working days when the applicant's documents and other requirements are in order.- EndsPublished By: Satyam SinghPublished On: Sep 15, 2026 22:31 IST
