The UFC Fight Night 289 main event was a thrilling fight between Raul Rosas Jr. and Raoni Barcelos, but it ended unexpectedly, raising serious concerns.

Rosas Jr. (13-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) and Barcelos (22-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) went to war and somehow reached the final round. At 1:38 of Round 5, the fight ended abruptly after a takedown sequence, leaving Barcelos lying unconscious on the canvas. The bantamweight fight served as the main event of UFC Fight Night 289 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas.

There was no time wasted getting into the action. Rosas Jr. quickly put pressure on Barcelos with strikes, causing Barcelos to open up his offense early as well. Rosas Jr. landed a clean shot that got the attention of Barcelos, causing the elder bantamweight to grab a single-leg attempt. Rosas Jr. got his leg back without much issue and resumed letting his hands go at a steady pace.

Barcelos found an opening for a clean takedown, but wasn't able to keep the scrambly Rosas Jr. on the ground for long. The left eye of Barcelos showed severe swelling late in the round, but that didn't stop him from firing back in heated exchanges.

Rosas Jr. continued to push the pace in Round 2 with crisp boxing. There were a couple of points in the round when Rosas Jr. sensed he could have landed one more clean punch to get Barcelos out of there, but the hard-nosed veteran took his lumps and kept firing back with big shots of his own while mixing in a takedown. It was non-stop action, and both fighters returned to their stool bloodied.

The third round saw some sustained moments on the mat, initiated by Barcelos. In the first instance, Rosas Jr. was able to reverse from the bottom position to land some ground-and-pound before the fight returned to standing. Barcelos continued to make things difficult for Rosas Jr. by mixing things up on the feet and scored another takedown in the closing moments of the round.

Rosas Jr. was taken down again in Round 4, with Barcelos working for back control while landing punches. Rosas Jr. attempted to pull off a few explosive scramble escapes, but found himself fighting off a rear-naked choke as Barcelos maintained superior positioning. Rosas Jr. got out once, but another deep choke appeared more threatening. Somehow, Rosas Jr. survived to see the final round.

Before the final round began, Rosas Jr. hyped up the crowd. He began with a strong burst of offense, but Barcelos slowed him down by getting him to the mat. Rosas Jr. powered his way up, gesturing to the crowd as he got up. More explosive offense from Rosas Jr. led to an awkward finishing sequence.
