UK-Sudanese author pens book to give children 'African history of Africa' - EWN

LONDON - Journalist and author Zeinab Badawi, whose history of Africa has sold more than 110,000 copies, is turning her attention to younger readers with a forthcoming children's edition of the book.

Badawi, best known for her work as a broadcaster for the UK's Channel 4 News and the BBC, was born in Sudan and brought up in England.

"An African History of Africa: From the Dawn of Humanity to Independence" was first published in 2024 and now she is working on a children's version.

Like the adult volume, the adapted edition will trace the broad sweep of African history from the rise of powerful kingdoms, great trading centres and influential leaders, before charting the continent's path towards independence in the modern era.

"Of course you have to engage the young reader through vivid illustrations and I have a wonderful illustrator who I think captures the essence of the characters I have focused on in the children's book," she told AFP.

"History is best understood if it is seared into the imagination and that is especially true for young readers," she added.
