Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the new academic building of the KLE Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavirmath Medical College (JGMMMC) and the 1,200-bed KLE Hospital and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) at Gabbur in Hubballi on Saturday.
Addressing presspersons in Hubballi on Wednesday, Chairman Emeritus of the Karnatak Lingayat Education Society (KLE) and Chancellor of KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER), Belagavi, Prabhakar Kore said that the integrated academic medical campus, built on land generously donated by Sir Gangadhara Rajayogindra Swami of Moorusavir Mutt, is spread over 50 acres and developed at an estimated cost of ₹700 crore, with a built-up area of over 30 lakh sq. ft.
The dedication ceremony will be held in the presence of Jagadguru Shri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Mahaswamiji of Moorusavirmath, Hubballi. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Karnataka Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharanaprakash R. Patil, and Labour and Employment Minister Santosh S. Lad are among those expected to attend.
Mr. Kore, who is also a former Rajya Sabha member, said that the medical college received approval from the National Medical Commission in October 2021 with an annual intake of 150 MBBS students. “It admitted its first batch in February 2022. The intake was raised to 200 seats in the 2025-26 academic year and has been increased to 250 seats from 2026-27,” he said.
The institution currently has five batches comprising around 800 MBBS students. It is also scheduled to introduce postgraduate programmes in 20 departments from the next academic year. “The inspection by the competent authorities for PG courses has been completed. We are expecting approval for 60 seats,” he said.
The college has facilities including lecture theatres, simulation laboratories, museums, research facilities, a central library and hostels. Faculty members have received competitive research grants, including a ₹1.4 crore grant from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), while students are participating in ICMR Short-Term Studentship and KAHER-funded research projects.
Mr. Kore said that the KLE Hospital and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) began services on January 1, 2025. “The 1,200-bed teaching hospital offers multi-specialty and super-specialty services, with facilities including operation theatres, intensive care units, emergency and trauma care, laboratories and advanced diagnostic services. We are offering healthcare facilities at affordable prices. For the poor, we have earmarked 300 beds. We are providing free and subsidised treatment to them,” Mr. Kore said.
Specialties at the hospital include general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, emergency medicine and ENT. Super-specialty services currently include neurology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology and endocrinology. Cardiology, oncology and organ transplantation services are expected to be introduced subsequently.
Mr. Kore said that owing to affordable healthcare facilities, the hospital registers over 1,000 outpatients daily and treats an average of 300 inpatients. The objective was to provide the best medical education and healthcare at affordable prices to residents of Hubballi-Dharwad and the districts of North Karnataka, he said.
The press meet was attended by former director of KLE Society Shankranna Munavalli, present director Manjunath Munavalli, KAHER Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Srivastava, JGMMC Director M.G. Hiremath, Pro-Chancellor of KLE Technological University Ashok Shettar and senior faculty members.
