A father in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district has performed the pind daan ritual and held a thirteenth-day death ceremony for his only daughter, even though she is alive. Hurt by her relationship and decision to leave home with her boyfriend, Raju Gupta has also decided to disinherit her from his property.

Gupta alleges that his daughter’s departure caused his wife, Parvati, 40, severe emotional distress, leading to her death. The incident has left the family devastated.

The incident took place in the Muratganj-Palhana Road area, under the Sandipan Ghat police station. Gupta’s daughter, around 19, is an intermediate-level student.

On October 15, she left home for college but did not return for a long time. When the family began looking for her, they learnt that she had left with her boyfriend, Amardeep Raidas, a resident of Dhanni village.

Following a missing-person complaint, Sandipan Ghat police launched an investigation. Within six hours, the police traced the young woman and her boyfriend and took them into custody for questioning.

According to the police, the woman was informed about her mother’s death but refused to attend the last rites. Since she was an adult, her statement was recorded before a court, after which she was allowed to leave with her boyfriend of her own free will.

After his wife’s death and his daughter’s departure, Gupta performed the pind daan ritual and held a thirteenth-day ceremony for his living daughter alongside the ceremony for his late wife.

The family had been preparing for the young woman’s wedding, which was scheduled for November 25. Her engagement had reportedly been called off twice before she got engaged again around a month ago, this time in Fatehpur district. Her mother’s death, however, plunged the family into grief before the wedding.- EndsEdited by Akhilesh Kumar
