UP school teacher shot dead by ex-lover before students; he then kills himself

Angered by his girlfriend ending their relationship, a 27-year-old man entered a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, shot her dead in front of students and then killed himself, police said.

The incident took place around 11:30 am on Monday at Children’s Academy School. The victim, identified as 26-year-old teacher Nishat Fatima, had been teaching at the school for about a year. Police said she and Mohammad Saud had been in a relationship and that Fatima had recently ended it.

Saud arrived at the school with a pistol hidden in a bag, police said. He called Fatima downstairs and later took her to a corridor on an upper floor.

A staff member followed them as they went upstairs, according to a senior police official. During a conversation in the corridor, Saud pulled out the pistol and shot Fatima in the head. He then shot himself. Both died at the scene.

CCTV footage showed Saud dragging Fatima by the arm toward the upper floor as young students watched. Fatima appeared to resist as he pulled her along.

Eyewitnesses told India Today’s sister channel AajTak that four rounds were fired. The gunfire sent students and school staff into panic. Staff members alerted police, who arrived at the school promptly.

Police said the school caters to students up to Class 5. CCTV cameras are being examined, along with the school’s security and access procedures.

“We will have more clarity on this matter after the post-mortem report,” the police official said.
