Investors are selling government debt on expectations that rising crude oil prices could keep inflation stubbornly high, prompting the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates again.

There's also growing unease about the US fiscal outlook.

The government-sponsored mortgage giant Freddie Mac says in the week through September 30 the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage climbed to 7.28 percent, the highest since November 2023.

If borrowing costs keep rising, it could pose political risks for President Donald Trump's administration as it heads into November's midterm elections.
