Americans headed to France are warned of protests and strikes that could disrupt their travel plans, according to a Nov. 4 security alert by the U.S. Embassy in Paris.

"A nationwide multi-sector strike is planned for Thursday, November 5, affecting teachers, healthcare workers, government employees, and public transport across France," said the alert, adding that it could last through the weekend.

Since late October, an estimated 600,000 people have taken to the streets to protest the high cost of living and the government's recent cuts to its public spending budget, according to The Guardian. In response, 70,000 law enforcement officers have been deployed and released tear gas at recent demonstrations in Bordeaux and Lyon. Curfews are currently implemented in some parts of Paris.

Four of the largest railway unions are included in the national strike, which will impact certain routes. Travelers are being told to anticipate possible disruptions outside of the planned routes.

The strike could also disrupt air travel, and travelers should check with their airline for flight status updates.

The embassy also recommends that people avoid areas with demonstrations or large gatherings. "Recent demonstrations were violent and involved property destruction and looting," the embassy said. "Police have responded with less-than-lethal crowd control methods."

On Oct. 21, the U.S. State Department reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for the country, with an updated summary urging travelers to "exercise increased caution in France due to terrorism and unrest."
