US official: Japan-US summit set for Tuesday | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

A senior US government official says Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae will meet President Donald Trump on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The official announced on Friday the date of the bilateral talks, which will take place ahead of a US-China summit planned for Thursday.

Takaichi is scheduled to visit New York from Monday to attend the UN session, and had been making final arrangements to hold a summit with Trump.

The official did not elaborate on details of the talks. But the US side is expected to coordinate views on China with Japan ahead of Thursday's summit.

The official also noted that at the US-China talks, artificial intelligence and trade between the two will be discussed. Both countries have been vying for leadership in the AI development race. An agreement reached between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last October for China to suspend bans on exports to the US of some critical minerals will expire in November this year. The official said both matters will be on the agenda.

A state dinner will reportedly be held on Thursday, with both Trump and Xi scheduled to give speeches. Other guests expected to attend include key AI and tech figures, such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Sam Altman.

Trump told reporters on Friday that he and Xi have a good relationship. He added that the two are "going to have a lot of different deals."
