Tensions between South Africa and the United States appear to be escalating, but foreign affairs correspondent Peter Fabricius says it remains unclear what prompted Washington's latest move.

Speaking on 702, Fabricius said he had expected further exchanges between the two countries after a message from US President Donald Trump was delivered to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Instead, the situation appears to have escalated, with questions remaining over the timing and reasons behind Washington's actions.

"To be honest with you, I'm a little bit uncertain myself about what's happening here," Fabricius said.
