USA TODAY Sports Super 25 high school football rankings, Week 6 - USA Today
A trick play, a matchup between top-10 teams, and an upset in Florida drove Super 25 action across Week 5 of the high school football season. Plus, a halftime scare for IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) turned into a romp for the Ascenders.
With that, Week 6 saw some shifts, though there wasn't massive change β but that doesn't mean these top teams had an easy time.
In the Southeast, IMG Academy trailed The First Academy (Orlando, FL) 24-7 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, that had been completely flipped. Georgia commit Jayden Wade completed a 70-yard touchdown pass to Osani Gayles on the first drive, and on the next, Eric McFarland had a 65-yard touchdown reception. The defense and special teams also scored, as Aaryn Washington had a pick-six and Gayles returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD.
The top matchup of the week, then-No. 9 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) against then-No. 10 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), resulted in Bishop Gorman's first victory ever against the California power. The Gaels retained their spot in the Super 25, but Mater Dei, whose offense has not been as strong as usual, slipped.
Buford (GA) faced a challenge with Grayson (Loganville, GA), but a fake field goal attempt helped the No. 4 team extend its lead and remain undefeated. In Texas, heroics from a North Crowley running back duo helped the Panthers gain a few spots in the rankings, and in Ohio, Gary Yeager's 227 rushing yards helped Washington (Massillon, OH) get its own win.
Meanwhile, West Boca Raton (FL) gave up an 11-point lead, falling to a Washington, D.C. power. It is the only Super 25 team to fal out of the rankings this week.
