Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to increase the compensation for the family of a Home Guard personnel who died following an alleged attack by a group of intoxicated youth in Ariyalur district, from ₹5 lakh to ₹50 lakh.
In a statement, he said Venkatesan, a resident of Nakkampadi village in Sendurai block, was attacked by the youth at Aathankurichi near Thalavay on October 29. He was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Thanjavur and died on November 1.
Pointing out Venkatesan had lost his wife and was raising his two children on a meagre salary, Mr. Thirumavalavan said the children had now lost both their parents. He urged the government to enhance the compensation, keeping their future in mind.
He also called for invoking the Goondas Act against those involved in the attack and ensuring speedy trial. Urging the State government to frame and implement measures to curb alcohol and drug abuse, he called for the gradual closure of liquor outlets and steps to eliminate the circulation of narcotic substances.
