In the United Kingdom, auto theft has become a growing problem, partly due to increasingly organized criminal networks. Cars stolen on demand are dismantled within hours; some are shipped abroad, while others are used in other crimes.
According to the British broadcaster BBC, a car is stolen every 4 minutes across the United Kingdom, and vehicle thefts in England and Wales have increased by approximately 50 percent over the past 10 years. The BBC reported that some stolen vehicles are sold in the United Kingdom or abroad after being fitted with new license plates, while others are used as getaway vehicles in crimes such as drug trafficking, human smuggling, robberies, and burglaries.
British police, meanwhile, revealed that most of the stolen vehicles are shipped to countries such as the United Arab Emirates, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Jamaica.AT LEAST 286 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED LAST MONTH
Reported vehicle theft cases in England and Wales fell by 5 percent last year, dropping to 119,000. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, however, case numbers remained largely unchanged, staying at approximately 5,000 and 1,200, respectively, on an annual basis. As a result of an operation conducted last month with the participation of 32 police forces, at least 286 people were arrested and 319 vehicles were seized.300,000 POUNDS IN FUNDING PER YEAR
The UK Home Office reported that last year, charges were filed against suspects or formal summonses were issued to appear in court in only 3 percent of vehicle theft cases. The Ministry announced that it will continue to support the police in the fight against organized vehicle theft and has allocated 300,000 pounds annually to strengthen efforts in this area.
