The Legal Cell of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), South Karnataka, has condemned the alleged attack on former Rangayana Director Addanda Cariappa, whose face was smeared with ink by protesters in Bengaluru on Saturday, and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved.
In a statement issued here on Monday, the VHP described the incident as an “attack on freedom of expression” and said such an act was contrary to the fundamental values of democracy.
It may be recalled that protesters targeted Mr. Cariappa during the staging of a controversial play on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination in Bengaluru on Saturday. The protesters had objected to the portrayal of Gandhi in the play.
The VHP has also sought adequate police protection for Mr. Cariappa and a detailed probe to identify those who instigated or encouraged the incident.
Describing the incident as an affront to the dignity and cultural identity of the Kodava community, the VHP demanded appropriate action against those responsible.
