Vibe X review: 'Organic comedy' wins viewers, Kunal Kemmu gets praise

Actors Kunal Kemmu and Preity Zinta's Vibe has opened to largely positive reactions on X. Some viewers called it the best comedy film of the year and praised its humour, cast and Kemmu's work as both actor and director. Early posts described the film as entertaining, balanced and high on humour. However, a section of viewers said it worked better in parts than as a whole.

The early conversation around the film has also centred on whether it is a theatrical watch or better suited for OTT. While several users backed a big-screen viewing and singled out performances by Kunal Kemmu, Preity Zinta, Sparsh Srivastava and Vanshika Dhir, one review criticised the second half, screenplay, action and songs, giving the film a more mixed response.

One user said they watched Vibe in a nearly empty theatre with only seven people present and came away liking the film. The user said the story begins in Mumbai and moves to Bangkok for the climax, adding that there is no reference to Madgaon Express. They praised the cast overall and called Kunal Kemmu's writing, direction and acting 'top notch'.

The same post said Sparsh Srivastava 'absolutely killed it' and was showing his range across low-budget and big-budget films, while adding that Dinesh Lal Yadav's character felt a little off. The user also said Yashpal Sharma was good as always, and praised Vanshika Dhir's character and accent.

At the same time, the post said Preity Zinta did not quite fit the character for them and suggested someone else could have been cast. A second user was far more direct, calling Vibe 'the best comedy film of this year till date' and saying Kunal Kemmu was 'insane' as both actor and director.

A third user wrote that Vibe was the most entertaining film they had seen in recent times and said the whole theatre was laughing, which they described as rare. The post called the film clean, balanced and high on humour, and said Preity Zinta and Kunal Kemmu were exceptional in their parts, ending with a vote for 'organic comedy'.

Not every reaction was fully favourable.

A fourth user called Vibe 'a fun ride ruined by boring 2nd half and laggy screenplay'. The post said the film was a glittery affair elevated by Kunal Kemmu's performance, adding that Preity Zinta was decent in her part and Sparsh Srivastava, as Bug, was very good.

The user, however, criticised the screenplay as laggy and poor, described parts of the writing as lazy, and said the direction worked in the first half but some sequences in the second half were almost unbearable.

The same review said the cinematography was good in places, but the action sequences were weak, especially later in the film. It also called the background music decent, said the songs did not work for them, and added that while some first-half dialogues drew big laughs, many others later fell flat.

In an earlier chat with India Today, Kunal Kemmu said he was not looking at it as a family rivalry and stressed that the two films belong to different genres, have audiences of their own and also have enough screens in the market. He said that ideally no one wants two films to release on the same day, but added that the market currently has enough space for both and that the issue would only arise if screen space was being cut into.

Kareena Kapoor Khan had also joked at the trailer launch of Daayra that the family would now get the entire box office collection.

Kunal Kemmu’s Vibe is an action-comedy that follows two ordinary friends, Hardik and Bugs. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they are pulled into a dangerous mission.

Written and directed by Kemmu, the film stars him alongside Preity Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava and debutant Vanshika Dhir. Preity plays Madam H, who recruits the unlikely duo for a mission linked to a threat against the country.
