A 19-year-old student was killed after a speeding car struck her in Punjab’s Faridkot district, before crashing into a roadside tea stall and injuring two more people. The incident took place in the Jaito area, with police arresting the car driver and impounding the vehicle. A video of the incident has also surfaced.

The circumstances surrounding the crash, including allegations that police personnel were pursuing the car in a private vehicle, are also being examined.

The victim has been identified as Arshpreet Kaur, daughter of Iqbal Singh and a resident of Hardayal Nagar in Jaito.

She was pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) at DAV College, Bathinda. According to reports, Arshpreet was walking towards the market near the railway station when the speeding car, approaching from the gate on Bishnandi Road, struck her.

The impact left Arshpreet, who was flung into the air, critically injured. She was rushed to Jaito Civil Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The car did not stop after hitting her and subsequently rammed a roadside tea stall. The stall owner and his brother, who were present there at the time, sustained injuries and were admitted to Jaito Civil Hospital for treatment.

People injured in the crash said the person behind the wheel was driving the car at an excessive speed. They also said that police personnel were chasing the vehicle in a private car before the collision.

However, the police have not confirmed this claim so far. The allegations are likely to form part of the investigation as officials put the pieces together and analyse the events leading up to the fatal crash.

Police reached the spot soon after receiving information about the accident and took the car into custody.

The driver, identified as Lakshman Bansal, was arrested and is being questioned. Police said further action would be taken after recording the statements of the victim’s family and completing the investigation.

Faridkot SP Jaspreet Singh said police received information that a girl had been hit by a car and immediately sent the duty officer to the spot.

He said the victim was identified during the investigation and a black Skoda car was impounded.

Asked whether the incident appeared to be a hit-and-run, the police said, "No, based on the information we have so far, it is a case of hit-and-run. The car struck her from behind... it hit her, resulting in her unfortunate death".

The driver remains in police custody as questioning continues. Investigators are expected to establish the exact sequence of events, determine how fast the vehicle was travelling and examine the allegations about the alleged police pursuit.

Further legal action will follow based on the investigation and statements recorded from the family and injured witnesses.- EndsPrem Kumar Passi input
