Video: UP women, out to shop for wedding, hide jewellery in mouths after stealing it
Two women have been arrested in Ghaziabad in connection with the theft of jewellery worth more than Rs 8 lakh from a jeweller’s shop in Bijnor’s Chandpur, police said. The stolen ornaments were recovered from the accused, while four other members of the gang are being searched for.
The incident took place on September 12 when five women and a man entered a jewellery shop in Chandpur market, posing as customers. According to the shop owner, Dinesh Verma, the group asked to see the jewellery and kept him engaged in conversation while examining the ornaments.
CCTV footage from inside the shop captured the theft. The footage reportedly shows some of the women placing jewellery in their mouths while pretending to examine the ornaments. They then left the shop with jewellery worth around Rs 8 lakh.
Verma later approached the police and handed over the CCTV footage. A case was registered and a team was formed to trace the accused.
Investigators examined hundreds of CCTV cameras along the route between Chandpur and Ghaziabad. Police said the group was seen travelling in two cars after leaving the jewellery shop.
Their movements were also captured on CCTV cameras at the Joya toll plaza. The footage helped investigators trace the group to Ghaziabad, where police gathered information about their identities and activities.
According to Bijnor Police, the group was involved in similar jewellery thefts in different areas. Police are also examining their possible involvement in cases reported in other districts and states.
The gang leader, Zahida alias Chhota, is a resident of Kela Dehat in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad, while her associate Ashiya also lives in the city.
Other members identified by police include Khatoon, a resident of Sahibabad, and Asmeen, Rukhsana, Chhalawa and Bhuriya, who are from Ghaziabad. Police identified Farid Khan as another key member who allegedly travelled with the group in the vehicle.JEWELLERY AND TWO CARS RECOVERED
Police arrested Zahida and Ashiya and recovered three pairs of gold earrings, four pairs of silver items and two cars from their possession.
Four other members of the group remain absconding. Police said they are likely to have other stolen jewellery and are being traced.
During questioning, Zahida reportedly told investigators that a wedding was scheduled in their family in Amroha, where they had to give ‘bhaat’, a traditional wedding gift from the maternal side. She reportedly said the rising price of jewellery prompted the group to steal ornaments to fulfil the requirement.
Police said the gang had previously carried out a similar theft in Dhampur and may have committed similar offences in other districts and states. Investigators are checking the criminal records of the arrested women and their associates to establish their involvement in previous cases.
Bijnor Superintendent of Police KK Bishnoi said efforts were underway to arrest the remaining members of the gang and establish their criminal history.
