Vijay govt signs two MoUs for GCCs in Tamil Nadu amid London trip row
Tamil Nadu signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to establish and expand Global Capability Centres in the state during Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s London visit, which had drawn Opposition criticism over its purpose and investment agenda.
The two projects are expected to attract an investment of around Rs 1,000 crore and create more than 2,600 high-value jobs in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli.
A UK-headquartered global communications company signed the first MoU with Ernst & Young and Guidance Tamil Nadu, the government’s investment promotion agency, to establish a Global Capability Centre in the state.
The company was not identified in the government announcement. The proposed centre will involve an investment of around Rs 1,000 crore and is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs.
It will be established along the newly announced GCC Corridor on Mount Poonamallee Road in Chennai.
The second MoU was signed with Sweden-based Sigma Technology Group to expand its existing Global Capability Centres in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli through its Indian entity, Sria Solutions.
The expansion is expected to create around 600 jobs in embedded systems, electrification and industrial digitalisation.MoUs AMID CONTROVERSY OVER VISIT
The announcement came amid Opposition criticism of Vijay’s four-day London visit after photographs showed him and actor Trisha at Ajith Kumar’s Le Mans Cup event at the Silverstone Circuit.
AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, who had initially welcomed the investment visit, took a swipe at Vijay after the photographs emerged. “See how he is attracting investments,” he said.
BJP state president Nainar Nagendran questioned whether the trip was official or personal and sought details of the delegation, expenditure and investments secured. DMK leaders also questioned why senior Industries Department officials were not accompanying Vijay.
The Silverstone visit was reportedly linked to Tamil Nadu’s proposed Motor Sports City, with the delegation studying the circuit’s infrastructure and operations. Vijay and the TVK have not responded directly to the criticism.- EndsPublished By: Aprameya RaoPublished On: Sep 14, 2026 20:37 IST
