This is one of the historical moments Tamil cinema fans can’t get enough of! Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and former actor, C Joseph Vijay, has just met his rival in cinema, actor and racer Ajith Kumar, on the sidelines of the Michelin Le Mans Cup at Silverstone. The pictures from the meet-up have instantly gone viral on social media.
While fans discuss what Vijay would have said to his friend and colleague Ajith, we look at four important occasions when the two stars met.
Of course, the two starred on screen together much earlier, in 1995’s Rajavin Parvaiyile. But one of the earliest public meetings came in 2005 during the pooja ceremony of Ajith’s action drama Thirupathi. Directed by Perarasu, the film went on floors on September 15, 2005, with a song shoot at the AVM Studios. Many pictures from the pooja ceremony showed Ajith and Vijay sharing hearty laughs with Ajith’s actor-wife Shalini and the female lead of Thirupathi, Sadha.

2. Tamil Nadu State Film Awards 2007
The two stars have met many times at various award functions, but fans will fondly remember the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards distribution function in 2007. In the pictures taken at the ceremony, Vijay and Ajith can be seen seated next to their colleagues, Vikram and Suriya.

3. South Indian Artistes Association’s fast in solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils in 2008
Both Ajith and Vijay participated actively in many industry-wide calls to action against social evils. On November 1, 2008, the South Indian Artistes Association observed a dawn-to-dusk fast in Chennai to express their solidarity with the plight of the Tamils in Sri Lanka who suffered during the civil war. Vijay and Ajith attended the fast as well.

4. Vijay’s visit to the Mankatha shooting spot in January 2011
This was the most famous ‘thala-thalapathy moment’ in the social media era, at least until now. In 2011, when social media started booming in India, Vijay and Ajith made all the headlines. In January, Vijay, who was shooting for his film Velayudham, visited the sets of Ajith Kumar’s Mankatha in Binny Mills, Perambur. Pictures even showed Vijay gifting Ajith a watch. After Mankatha turned out to be a blockbuster, director Venkat Prabhu, one of the few filmmakers to have helmed both stars, revealed that Vijay wondered why he wasn’t approached for the role of ACP Prithviraj IPS, which was played by Arjun Sarja in the film. Oh, how glorious that would have been!
