Vinod Kambli struggles to speak coherently in video from elderly care center
Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli struggled to speak fluently in a latest video from an elderly care centre in Thane, where the 54-year-old is currently undergoing treatment. Kambli, however, offered an assuring message to his fans and praised the centre for its facilities and care.
The 54-year-old is currently staying at the Nidan Centre for Elderly Care, where he spoke about the treatment and care he has been receiving. Kambli praised the facilities at the centre and expressed gratitude towards the medical team and support staff.
"I am currently undergoing treatment. I would like to mention that the facilities here are excellent. Staying here, I never feel like I am away from home. The former batter's message comes after years of health struggles that have increasingly kept him in the public eye. A video of Kambli struggling to walk in August 2024 had sparked concern among fans. At the time, there was speculation about his condition, although his health issues had been documented over several years. Kambli had suffered a heart attack in 2013 and subsequently underwent angioplasty for blockages in his arteries.
His health deteriorated further towards the end of 2024. In December that year, Kambli was admitted to a hospital in Thane after complaining of a urinary infection, cramps, dizziness and fever. Doctors found electrolyte imbalances, including low sodium and potassium levels, which contributed to his muscle cramps and mobility problems. Further examinations also revealed clots in his brain, with doctors saying they were linked to an earlier stroke.
Kambli spent around two weeks in hospital before being discharged on January 1, 2025. He walked out of the hospital with assistance, holding a cricket bat, and thanked his well-wishers for their support.
Earlier this year, Kambli marked Sachin Tendulkar's 53rd birthday by returning to Shivaji Park, the ground where their cricketing journeys began under coach Ramakant Achrekar. He later spent time with young cricketers at Shivaji Park and shared ice cream with them, recalling the memories they had created together during their early days.
The health concerns have been particularly difficult for those who remember Kambli as one of India's most gifted young batters. Alongside Sachin Tendulkar, he emerged from Mumbai's cricketing system under coach Ramakant Achrekar and went on to make his India debut in 1991.
Kambli played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India between 1991 and 2000. He scored 1,084 runs in Tests at an average of 54.20, including four centuries, while he accumulated 2,477 runs in ODIs.
His latest video, however, carries a message of reassurance rather than despair. Kambli spoke positively about the care he is receiving and stressed that the support at the centre has helped him feel at home.
