The Visayas grid will be placed under red and yellow alerts from Tuesday afternoon to evening, September 15, due to thin energy reserves, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

The Visayas grid will be placed under red and yellow alerts from Tuesday afternoon to evening, September 15, due to thin energy reserves, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

In an advisory, NGCP said the red alert will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the yellow alert status will be in effect from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Visayas grid currently has an available capacity of 2,352 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is at 2,492 MW, NGCP said.

The red and yellow alerts were declared due to the unavailability of large coal plants in the Visayas, including Therma Visayas Inc. Units 1 and 2 and Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3.

NGCP also cited limited power imports from the Mindanao grid.

Twelve plants went on forced outage in September. Meanwhile, three plants have been unavailable since August 2026, one since July, two since June, and seven since May. Three other plants have been on forced outage since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

In addition, 15 plants are operating at derated capacities, bringing the total unavailable capacity to 962.9 MW.

A red alert is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement. β€”VBL, GMA News
