WATCH: A community's voice preserved: Merebank legacy book launched - IOL

The Merebank Book Project launched The Legacy of Merebank: Our People, Our Culture, Our Stories, a book that captures the memories, heritage and lived experiences of generations of Merebank residents, at the MTSS Hall today.

The book stands as one of the most comprehensive collections of community stories ever produced about Merebank.

It was created to preserve a legacy that belongs not only to today's residents, but also to generations yet to come.

Ashok Madhunlall, a member of the Merebank Book Project, said the book draws on personal memories, historical research, family archives and community contributions.

“The book chronicles the evolution of Merebank through its triumphs, challenges and defining moments. It tells the story of ordinary people whose lives collectively shaped an extraordinary community.

"This book is our gift to future generations. It preserves not only dates and events, but the values, humour, resilience and voices of the people who made Merebank what it is today," Madhunlall said.

The Merebank Book Project is a community-driven heritage initiative dedicated to documenting, preserving and celebrating the history of Merebank. 

Madhunlall said through research, storytelling and collaboration, the project ensures that the people, culture and stories of Merebank continue to inspire future generations.

The Merebank Book Legacy Trust will oversee the funds generated from the sale of the book. 

All funds generated will be ploughed back into the Merebank community for its rejuvenation, renaissance and improvement.
