WATCH: KZN deploys teams after hail, heavy rain and strong winds - IOL

A hail storm swept across parts of Durban earlier today.

Roving teams from KwaZulu-Natal’s transport and human settlements departments are monitoring roads and high-risk communities after severe thunderstorms – including rain and hail - affected parts of the province.

“The storm was triggered by a cut-off low-pressure system that affected several road networks and human settlements in various parts of KZN,” said Siboniso Duma, KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements.

He said his office had received updates about the implementation of the Flood Response Plan and requested that motorists and members of the public be vigilant. 

“We have roving teams from Human Settlements, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Operation Shanela monitoring road networks and human settlements in various parts of the province.

“In particular, various areas in eThekwini Municipality have already been hit by severe thunderstorms accompanied by hail, rain, and strong winds. These severe weather patterns have been triggered by the cut-off low-pressure system.

“We request motorists to exercise extra caution. Motorists must reduce speed and maintain the following distance,” Duma added.

The department cautioned road users about slippery roads and poor visibility during such severe weather patterns.

“Our highly efficient RTI team has been deployed in various strategic routes to monitor and direct traffic where necessary.

“We are working with municipalities and other relevant government departments. Human Settlements teams are monitoring high-risk areas and will also intervene quickly, where necessary, to assist communities in distress,” Duma said.
