Taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni says the Madlanga Commission has attracted attention far beyond South Africa, claiming it became a talking point during his recent stay at a European hotel.

Sibanyoni returned to the commission’s witness stand on Monday, telling proceedings that people abroad were closely following the inquiry into alleged corruption and state capture.

“I was in Europe, when I was there in that hotel, you were the topic of the day,” Sibanyoni told the commission.

He said the international scrutiny showed the significance of the proceedings, describing it as being watched with “Belgian eyes”.

Sibanyoni faces allegations of extortion and corruption in Mpumalanga.

He previously gave evidence about his troubled business relationship with the late taxi boss Jothan Msibi, whom he accused of orchestrating two attempts on his life.

Sibanyoni said the second alleged assassination attempt followed his decision to leave their taxi partnership in 2019.The proceedings continue.
