Western Cape police said a decline in violent crime in some of Cape Town’s gang hotspots shows Operation Prosper is starting to have an impact.

The joint police and military operation was launched on 1 April, targeting areas battling high levels of gang violence.

During the first three months of the operation, police recorded declines in contact crimes across several areas where officers and soldiers were deployed.

The Western Cape recorded 1,071 murders between April and June this year.

This is 77 fewer than during the same period last year.
