We don't need new laws: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang hits back at AI slow down demands
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is one of the biggest proponents of AI. He has now gone against OpenAI and Anthropic when it comes to regulating AI research. “We don't need any new laws. We need new regulation,” Huang said, insisting that there should be no regulation in slowing AI development. His comments come at a time when Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have urged for policies to help regulate research.
Speaking at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference on Tuesday, Huang accepted that “safety was "paramount.’ But, he added, that “safety is an engineering problem” and not a legal one. The Nvidia CEO insisted that companies must test their products extensively for safety by themselves. “If we're not confident about the safety of the product, then don't release it,” he added.
As per Jensen Huang, simply not releasing a product that may be unsafe was an easier thing to do rather than going forward with regulations around AI. “So that's a very obvious thing to do. You pace yourself until you are confident you're releasing something that the market would appreciate,” he said.Jensen Huang says false choice to pick safety or pace
In addition, Jensen Huang claimed that the AI industry could build safe products without having to slow down development. “We just need companies to decide when (to) run as fast as they can. I think speed, and safe products.. it’s a false choice,” he said. "You can definitely have both at the same time.”
Huang’s remarks come as a wider debate sharpens across the AI industry over whether the technology should be developed more slowly and under tighter oversight. Jensen Huang’s company, Nvidia, is the biggest maker of advanced AI chips that are used in AI data centres globally.
Discussions about such regulation arose after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon wrote on X, “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” Since then, multiple AI researchers including OpenAI’s Marcus Wiliams and Anthropic’s Evan Hubinger have made similar comments.
Since then, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has suggested ways where democratic governments like the US can help slow down AI research. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and tech trillionaire Elon Musk have also backed such a proposal.
While OpenAI and Anthropic are pushing for AI regulation, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has argued that companies should ensure safety on their own. At the same time, Jensen Huang has sided with US President Donald Trump, who has outright rejected the idea of slowing down AI development in the US.
Earlier in the week, Jensen Huang had a phone call with Donald Trump onstage, where both pushed back against the idea of slowing AI development. Huang also said, "I’m more ambitious than ever... The sky’s the limit for our company.
