Wendy’s fans wanted that old thing back and now, they shall receive it.

The fast food chain will soon serve up nuggets, fries and Frostys in the brand’s original yellow cups and boxes, the company confirmed.

The return of the yellow era is something customers have long desired, Wendy’s Chief Marketing and Customer Growth Officer Tariq Hassan said in a statement to USA TODAY.

"Fans asked. Constantly," Hassan said. "It's one of the most requested things we've ever had come back."

Here’s what we know, including when customers might start seeing yellow.

Wendy’s has sold its burgers, nuggets and other products in classic yellow packaging since the beginning, Hassan said. The company opened its first location in November 1969 in Columbus, Ohio.

"Like any brand, Wendy's has refreshed its look and feel over time, and our packaging evolved along with it," Hassan said.

After the restaurant chain nixed its signature yellow color, items were sold in red and white containers with the company logo affixed to them.

Rumors have been circulating that the rollout will begin on Sept. 28, according to an unverified manager guide shared on Reddit on Sept. 9. The notice said the throwback packaging will continue into November.

Wendy's did not immediately share a specific launch date, but told USA TODAY it will be rolling out the packaging to restaurants nationwide later in September, continuing into 2027.

Customers have long shared their desire for the signature Wendy's yellow packaging to return.

"Throwback, when all the Wendy’s had the yellow packaging," wrote a Facebook user in February, sharing photos of the sunlit, solarium dining rooms Wendy's was known for back in the day.

"You just had to be there to remember," the user continued.

Over the years, customers have joked that yellow packaging made the food taste better.

"I miss the old Wendy’s," wrote Bronx-based content creator Daron The Chef in May 2025. "The yellow packaging had powers I think."

And the Frostys? "The Frosty used to hit different in them yellow cups," wrote another Facebook user, sharing Daron’s post.

Hassan said the fans are obviously deeply-connected to the restaurant’s look back in the day, so it was only right for them to bring the packaging back. He added that it’s more than packaging, though.

"Seeing that yellow packaging takes them right back to a time, feeling or memory that includes Wendy’s, whether it's stopping in after school with friends or celebrating a big win with family over a Frosty," Hassan said. "That kind of emotional connection is powerful and you can’t design it into packaging. It’s created in those special moments and something all brands hope to earn: a meaningful place in people’s lives."

As rumors spread online, Redditors noted that fans want more than just the old packaging returning– it’s the old-school quality they desire most.

"I need those seedy kaiser buns, foil-wrapped burgers, legitimately fresh[er] ingredients, good fries," wrote one Reddit user.

“When people say they miss yellow Wendy’s, we mean the food quality not the … cup color,” another user wrote.

Wendy's announced plans last year to close 5% to 6% of its stores nationwide. The closures were slated for the first half of 2026 and were part of the brand's downsizing plan.

CEO Ken Cook announced during a Nov. 7 quarterly earnings call that the company would close a "mid single-digit percentage" of its more than 6,000 locations nationwide. By February, the company had already closed 28 restaurants in the last quarter of 2025 as part of the reduction.

As of early August, the company had more than 7,000 restaurants worldwide, Wendy's said in a recent press release.
