Western Cape police crack down on Cape Town taxi violence - EWN
Western Cape police vowed to crack down on taxi-related violence in Cape Town, warning that those responsible for the killings will face the full force of the law.
Police and City of Cape Town officials met urgently on Thursday to strengthen their response to the bloodshed and address ongoing tensions within the taxi industry.
Since the violence erupted three weeks ago, at least a dozen people have been killed and many others injured in Delft, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Epping, and Bonteheuwel, among other areas.
At Delft’s Palms taxi rank, two men were shot and killed last Thursday, while two more people were wounded in a shooting on Wednesday.
The Delft Palms taxi rank remains closed under heavy police guard, with members of the South African National Defence Force also deployed.
The violence is linked to disputes over lucrative routes between rival taxi associations, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA).
