‘When we go, you will come’: Rahul Gandhi says PM told him only Congress can defeat BJP

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday (September 29, 2026), asserted that only Congress can defeat the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had remarked the same, during a closed door meeting.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, who spoke for 20-25 minutes at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, focused on the principle of resistance within the party and asked his colleagues to have confidence in themselves. 

Recalling a selection committee meeting with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, Mr. Gandhi said that when he raised objections, Mr. Modi said he was only acting as previous Prime Ministers like Indira Gandhi, would have acted. Mr. Gandhi said he reminded the Prime Minister that she lost the subsequent election.

“You don’t believe me, but the Prime Minister and Home Minister, in the [closed door] meeting [with me], told me, ‘When we go, you will come’... So you should trust me,” Mr Gandhi said with a smile. He urged his colleagues to have more confidence in themselves as even the BJP knows only Congress can defeat it.

Asked about Mr Gandhi’s remarks, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal declined to comment, saying what was said indoors was meant only for the CWC.

Mr. Gandhi also asserted that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has to resign as the Congress would “fight to finish.” 

Talking about the alleged vote chori campaign, Mr. Gandhi said that if 20% of people believed the issue earlier [when the campaign was started], more than 80% believe it now, and the party should raise the issue more strongly.

The Congress party is planning to hold rallies at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi and in the capitals of all States over the Election Commission issue. But the future course of action will be decided after the 

INDIA bloc meeting will be held on September 30.
