Who Really Controls KPK Investigations
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A new pattern has emerged among the leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the 2024-2029 term. Since the five commissioners were elected two years ago, only two have regularly appeared to explain the results of sting operations or provide updates on corruption investigations.
They are KPK Chair Setyo Budiyanto—a retired police general—and Deputy Chair Fitroh Rohcahyanto, who comes from the Attorney General's Office. In previous years, both Setyo and Fitroh spent several years working at the KPK. The two have appeared to dominate nearly every corruption inquiry and investigation at the agency.
One person monitoring the new dynamic at the anti-graft agency is Wana Alamsyah, Head of the Legal and Investigations Division at Indonesia Corruption Watch. He said the situation among the current KPK leadership appeared unusual. "The dominance of certain figures in the KPK's public communications should be viewed as an unhealthy sign," he said on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Tempo spoke with several KPK employees and people familiar with how the commission operates. It turns out that the five KPK leaders have already divided their responsibilities, with each holding specific duties and authority.
