The third and final wave of Social Security payments for September is set to go out this week under the regular payment schedule.

Social Security benefits, paid mostly to older or retired Americans, are typically issued on Wednesdays.

That has led several groups to propose ways to fix Social Security, including a Washington think tank that drew attention for a paper proposing capping annual benefits at $100,000 to shore up the retirement trust fund. 

Here’s what you need to know about this week’s Social Security payments.

Beneficiaries born between the 21st and the last day of their birth month will receive their monthly Social Security benefit on Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to the SSA's payment calendar.

Social Security benefits are usually paid on Wednesdays.

If a recipient’s birthdate is the first and 10th of the month, they are usually issued payments on the second Wednesday of the payment month, according to the SSA's calendar. Recipients born from the 11th to the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, and those born after the 20th are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

Recipients who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 can expect their payment on the third day of the month, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday.

Individuals who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can expect their Social Security payment on the third day of the month and their SSI payment on the first day of the month.

Recipients of Supplemental Security Income checks typically receive payments on the first business day of the month. September's payment was issued on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
