Twenty-five years after the September 11 terror attacks, the identities and roles of the 19 al-Qaeda members who hijacked four passenger aircraft remain central to the historical record of the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil.

On September 11, 2001, the attack was carried out by 19 members of the Al-Qaeda group led by Osama bin Laden, killing 2,977 people, including all 19 terrorists.

The 19 Al-Qaeda members hijacked four planes. Two were crashed into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. ET, while United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.

A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, smashed into the west side of the Pentagon (the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense in Virginia) at 9:37 a.m.

The fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in a field in southern Pennsylvania after passengers and crew fought hijackers to prevent it from hitting its target in Washington, either the U.S. Capitol or the White House.

The 9/11 attacks killed more than 2,600 people at the World Trade Center, while 125 were killed at the Pentagon; 265 people—passengers, crew and the hijackers—died on the planes, according to the FBI.

Hanjur's date of arrival in the U.S. listed above "represents entry we believe is related to 11 September attacks, but Hanjur, unlike the other suspected hijackers, had traveled in and out of the US since 1991," the CIA noted.

Based on the list, most of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Fifteen were Saudi nationals, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was Egyptian and one was Lebanese.
