Why do countries issue travel advisories and what do they actually mean for you?

You may have seen headlines saying that India, the US, UK or another country has issued a travel advisory for a particular destination. But what exactly does that mean for an ordinary traveller?

A travel advisory is essentially a government's way of informing its citizens about potential risks associated with travelling to or staying in another country or region.

The exact instructions depend on the situation and should be read directly from the government's latest advisory.CAN A TRAVEL ADVISORY AFFECT YOUR VISA OR FLIGHT?

A travel advisory and a visa or entry restriction are not the same thing.

A government warning its citizens about risks in another country does not automatically mean that the destination has stopped issuing visas or that flights have been cancelled.
