Why PMK decided to stay ‘neutral’ for Madurantakam and Dharapuram byelection

After the PMK decided to stay “neutral” in the upcoming byelection in the reserved constituencies of Madurantakam and Dharapuram, senior leaders of the PMK, privately, cited the tumultuous relationship with the AIADMK as one of the main reasons for its decision.

A senior PMK leader said the “attitude” of the AIADMK leadership continued to be a sore point hampering a “natural alliance”.

“AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami does not ensure there is mutual respect and give and take. Our leader urged the AIADMK to field Poovai M. Jagan Moorthy in Madurantakam, but the party rejected it,” he alleged. “We feel our suggestions are not being given due consideration. There is no consultation. Has there been a meeting between the PMK and the AIADMK leaders after the elections?” he asked.

Another PMK leader said the party continued to “wait and watch” as the leadership felt its role would be a crucial cog in the wheel in the next elections. The party is reportedly focussing on consolidating the “positive perception” that it has garnered, thanks to the performance of PMK floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani in the Assembly.

“Sowmiya madam’s speeches are being received well on social media, and we are seeing the change in perception among the youngsters and the people at large. She is being seen as effable, fair, and knowledgeable. The party wants to consolidate these gains. An alliance can be decided before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections,” he added, though the party has not officially exited the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.
